There are different and most effective methods to calculate your weight and height. Whatever you decide to use, remember that it depends a lot on the unique physical characteristics which vary from person to person.

A person of a certain weight may appear portly, while another person of the same weight may be of normal looking.

1- Quetelet Body Mass Index

Knowing your body mass index can help you avoid harmful health issues such as obesity and anorexia. The method is applicable to both men and women between the ages of approx 20 and 60.

However, it can give erroneous results in the case of pregnant, athletes, the elderly, and adolescents (under 18 years).

How is it calculated? Square your height in meters. Divide your weight in kilograms by the number obtained. For instance, your height is 170 cm; your weight is 65 kg. Therefore, 65 : (1.7 * 1.7) = 22.5.

The resulting number is actually representing your body mass index. The average normal value for men is between 19 and 25. For women, it is between 19 and 24.

2- Volume Comparison

The Quetelet index is often very useful in determining the amount of fat in your body. But it does not give the exact idea of how fat is distributed throughout your body.

In other words, it does not offers a visual representation. If you are looking for such a representation, you should use the following formula:

Your waist girth (at the navel level area) divided by your volume of the buttocks. The normal value for men at least – 0.85; for women – 0.65-0.85.

3-  Broca Index

The Broca Index is one of the most popular and authentic methods for calculating a healthy weight/height ratio. It takes into account the correlation between a person’s height, weight, body type, and age as well.

For people under 40 years of age, the formula is Height (in centimeters) minus 110.

For people over 40 years of age: height (in centimeters) minus 100.

It should be noted that for people of the asthenic physique (with fine bones), the resulting value should be reduced by 10%.

On the other side, in the case of people with hypersthenic structure (large bones), the resulting value must be increased by 10%.

How can I determine my body type? You can easily do this by measuring the circumference of the thinnest part of your wrist.

4- Age Considerations

It is scientifically proven that both men and women gain weight as they grow old. This is basically a normal physiological process. Therefore, not all the pounds you gain during your life span can be considered “unnecessary”.

To get a more age-oriented estimate of your ideal weight-to-height ratio, use this formula: ‘H’ is your height (in centimeters); ‘A’ is your age (in years). Body mass equals to 50 + 0.75 (H — 150) + (A — 20) : 4

5- Nagler’s Formula 

This is another very helpful formula that helps you figure out your weight-height correlation. If we accept that a height of 152.4 cm must correspond to a weight of 45 kg, then each additional inch of height must correspond to additional weight which is 900 g.

After finishing your weight calculations, add another 10% of the resulting weight value to the figure.
